Despite the recent blizzard, Broadway's box office numbers remained resilient, with a 6% drop in receipts for the week ending February 22, totaling $31,554,841. This was despite a 28-show lineup, one more than the previous week. Attendance dipped just 2%, with 242,027 attendees, indicating a strong showing for most performances. However, eight shows had to cancel performances due to the storm, with significant box office losses for several productions.
Among the affected shows were "Yuliet" (down $195,292), "All Out: Comedy About Ambition" ($77,149), "Chicago" (down $169,110), "Oh, Mary!" ($216,345), "The Book of Mormon" ($234,496), and "Wicked" ($408,223). The Alicia Keys musical "Hell's Kitchen" sold out 99% of its seats, grossing $1,438,730, its highest since December 2024.
"Operation Mincemeat" also defied the trend, with its original British cast performing eight sold-out shows, grossing $1,107,825, a $150,105 increase from the previous week. The cast celebrated with a concert-style livestream for fans.
"Stranger Things: The First Shadow" grossed $1,584,338 for seven shows, despite losing the Sunday night performance, which was filmed for a future film release.
New to Broadway, "Every Brilliant Thing" starring Daniel Radcliffe, had a successful first week, selling out and grossing $304,427. Opening night is set for March 12.
Other sell-outs included "Chicago", "Hadestown", "Hamilton", "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child", "Just in Time", "Operation Mincemeat", and "Stranger Things: The First Shadow". "Hell's Kitchen", "Moulin Rouge!", and "Ragtime" were nearly sold out, with 99% attendance.
The top earners were "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" ($2,570,906), "Hamilton" ($2,139,682), "The Lion King" ($1,923,682), "Wicked" ($1,616,106), "Stranger Things" ($1,584,338), and "Just in Time" ($1,508,060). Only "Bug", "Chess", and "Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)" saw attendance below 80%.
Broadway's season-to-date gross is $1,425,678,511, an 8% increase over the previous year, with 10,658,235 attendees, a 3% rise. These figures are from The Broadway League, which provides more box office insights on its website.
