The Diamondbacks have designated right-hander Gus Varland for assignment to make room on their 40-man roster. While the financial terms of Clarke's deal remain undisclosed, the move signals a strategic shift for the team.
Taylor Clarke, a familiar face to Arizona fans, was originally drafted by the Diamondbacks in the third round back in 2015. He debuted with the team four years later, showcasing his versatility in a swing role. After spending parts of three seasons with the MLB club, Clarke transitioned to a full-time bullpen role, a position he's held for the majority of the last half-decade. Interestingly, he even got some experience as a starter with Milwaukee's Triple-A team in 2024, though he's primarily been a reliever in the big leagues.
Remember when the Diamondbacks non-tendered Clarke after a tough season with a near-5.00 earned run average in 2021? He then landed a deal with the Royals and spent the next two seasons in their bullpen. Despite decent strikeout and walk numbers, he struggled with a high average on balls in play, leading to a combined 5.08 ERA. The Royals eventually traded him to Milwaukee, where he was waived and kept in Triple-A.
But the Royals saw something they liked, bringing Clarke back on a minor league deal last offseason. He earned a call-up by the beginning of May and rewarded them with the best season of his career, pitching 55 1/3 innings with a 3.25 ERA. While his strikeout rate (21.4%) and swinging strike percentage (10.1%) were slightly below average, Clarke benefited from an unusually low .208 BABIP against him. He also impressively limited his walks to an excellent 4.4%, particularly shining in the second half of the season.
And this is the part most people miss... Despite his success, the Royals surprisingly chose not to offer him an arbitration contract, which likely would have been around $2 million. This led to a reversal of the situation from the 2021-22 offseason, with Clarke now signing a major league deal with Arizona.
With over five years of service time, Clarke can't be sent to the minors without his consent. He's now locked into the Opening Day bullpen alongside Ryan Thompson and Kevin Ginkel.
Here's a potential point of controversy: The Diamondbacks currently lack elite back-end arms to handle high-pressure situations, especially with A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez injured. While Clarke can bolster the middle innings, he lacks significant high-leverage experience.
