It's time to ring in the New Year with a bang, but not the kind that hurts! The EcoWaste Coalition is on a mission to make the New Year's Eve celebrations safer and greener with their 'Iwas Paputoxic' campaign.

The coalition, along with dedicated health professionals, government bodies, and environmental advocates, gathered at Pinyahan Elementary School to educate over 1,000 students and teachers about the hidden dangers of firecrackers and fireworks. These festive staples, while seemingly harmless, can lead to injuries, fires, and environmental damage year after year.
And here's where it gets controversial: firecrackers don't just harm humans. Dr. Percival Lao, from the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health, shed light on the often-overlooked impact on animals and the environment. The loud explosions can traumatize pets and wildlife, and the toxic smoke and debris pollute the air, water, and soil, affecting all living beings.
A call for change:
The campaign urged students to opt for eco-friendly noisemakers instead of firecrackers. EcoWaste Coalition's National Coordinator, Aileen Lucero, promoted the use of handmade noisemakers from everyday household items, a creative and sustainable solution to reduce injuries and waste. This approach ensures a fun and safe celebration for all, including our furry friends and the planet.
The event showcased a variety of alternative noisemakers, from shakers made of used boxes to musical instruments and kitchen utensils. The students enthusiastically participated, shouting slogans for injury and pollution prevention and playing their noisemakers with joy.
Parent and student leaders also emphasized the importance of personal and community health, reminding everyone that firecrackers are not toys and should be avoided.
The 'Iwas Paputoxic' campaign, initiated in 2006, aims to create a lasting impact by reducing firecracker-related injuries, air pollution, and toxic waste during the holidays. It aligns with the government's 'Iwas Paputok' program, led by the Department of Health, to promote safer New Year's Eve traditions.
