Exciting News for Electric Vehicle Enthusiasts! Starting today, individuals can apply for new state funding to assist with the purchase of electric vehicles, retroactively effective from January 1, 2025. This initiative aims to encourage the transition towards greener transportation and is accessible via the Environmental Fund’s official website.
The application window will remain open until February 12, 2026, or until the allocated budget runs out, which the government recently announced totals a substantial €17.6 million.
To qualify for this financial support, applicants must purchase a brand-new vehicle and also commit to scrapping an older fossil fuel car that is more than ten years old. Depending on the category of the beneficiary, the incentives for light electric passenger vehicles can range from €4,000 to €5,000. However, it’s important to note that the purchase price of these vehicles cannot exceed €38,500, which includes VAT and related costs; for larger vehicles with more than five seats, the limit is €55,000.
For those interested in bicycles—whether they are cargo bikes with electric assistance, conventional models, or other types—the support can vary from €500 to €1,500. Additionally, there are incentives available up to €1,500 for motorcycles, mopeds, tricycles, and electric quadricycles. Even electric vehicle chargers are eligible for financial assistance under this program.
This initiative is part of the broader Green Mobility package, designed to aid in the decarbonization of the transportation sector, which is currently responsible for the largest share of carbon emissions in Portugal. The Ministry of Environment and Energy emphasizes that this measure not only aims to reduce emissions but also strives to enhance environmental quality and promote more sustainable modes of transportation.
