Energy prices are soaring, and it's a hot topic that's got everyone talking. A recent report has revealed a shocking 13% increase in energy bills since President Trump took office, and the numbers are only expected to climb higher.
The report, by Climate Power, a climate advocacy group with notable Democratic figures on its board, analyzed data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. It found that Trump's controversial spending bill, signed in July, is a major culprit, removing cheaper, cleaner energy sources from the grid and funding tax breaks for the oil and gas industries.
But here's where it gets controversial: the report claims that projects canceled or delayed under Trump's administration have resulted in a loss of energy generation capable of powering over 13 million homes!
And this is the part most people miss: the demand for energy is skyrocketing, driven by data centers and extreme heat. Mark Wolfe, co-director of the Center for Energy Poverty and Climate, puts it simply: "A lot of it is data centers."
David Spence, a professor of energy law, agrees, stating that demand is outpacing supply, and that's driving prices up. He highlights other energy-intensive technologies like Bitcoin mining and electric vehicles as additional factors.
Another analysis by the Center for American Progress and the Natural Resources Defense Council supports these findings, showing a 9.6% increase in utility bills for U.S. households this year compared to 2024.
The impact is being felt across the country, with Americans struggling to pay their energy bills and accumulating debt. Mark Pierce, executive director of Protect Borrowers, says Texas has the highest number of residents in utility debt, with over 943,000 households facing overdue balances.
So, what's the solution? Daniel Bresette, president of the Environmental and Energy Study Institute, says it's a topic that everyone on Capitol Hill is fixated on.
But Trump's administration has a different take. A White House spokesperson claims that fixing the energy crisis is a priority for Trump, blaming Biden's green energy policies for soaring electricity prices. They argue that Trump's policies cut regulatory costs, increasing supply and lowering prices.
Trump has been vocal about his criticism of clean energy sources, promising to boost fossil fuel production during his 2024 presidential campaign. He's made controversial claims about wind energy, stating that wind turbines cause cancer and kill whales, despite a lack of scientific evidence to support these statements.
In September, Trump spent a significant portion of his address to the United Nations General Assembly disparaging renewable energy sources, calling them "too expensive" and claiming they "don't work."
The impact of Trump's policies on the clean energy sector is significant, with the Climate Power report estimating a loss or stall of over 165,000 jobs.
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., accused the Trump administration of "squashing clean energy," stating that clean energy is often low-cost.
