First Images of Liverpool University’s New School of Architecture | Tour & Insights (2026)

The highly anticipated architectural masterpiece is finally unveiled! Liverpool University's new School of Architecture is almost complete, and the first images are here, leaving everyone in awe.

This ambitious project, already in use since last month, showcases a stunning 3,000m² three-story extension on what used to be a car park. But that's not all; it also involves a thoughtful remodeling of the school's existing facilities. And the transformation is remarkable!

The development includes a revamp of the iconic Leverhulme Building, a 1930s Charles Reilly design, which underwent an overhaul in the 1980s by King and McAllister. The adjacent Georgian residential terrace is also part of this extensive renovation.

A Unanimous Decision: In 2019, after a rigorous two-stage selection process, O'Donnell + Tuomey's design was unanimously chosen for this prestigious project. The judging panel, led by renowned architecture critic Kenneth Frampton, included Tate director Maria Balshaw and the esteemed architect Michael Wilford.

A Competitive Field: The Irish firm emerged victorious from a longlist of 18 renowned practices, narrowed down to six for the final decision. They beat out heavyweights like 6a architects, Eric Parry Architects, Carmody Groarke, Haworth Tompkins, and Grafton Architects, proving their exceptional talent.

A Major Milestone: Marco Iuliano, a teacher at the architecture school and the mastermind behind the original competition, celebrated the building's opening as a significant achievement. He acknowledged the challenges in modern architecture but praised the university's unwavering commitment and the architects' resilience in delivering a project of outstanding quality.

Involving the Community: Iuliano emphasized the unique aspect of this project: the active involvement of students and staff from the very beginning. This educational aspect, he believes, sets it apart from any other architectural endeavor, making it a constant workshop and a truly collaborative effort.

The extension boasts a clever design, featuring overlapping studios, exhibition and teaching spaces, offices, and even a café. It received the official stamp of approval from Liverpool City Council in 2022.

A Public Debut: The new architecture school will host the AJ Small Projects 2026 Award at the end of April, marking the first time the extension will be open to the public. This event promises to be a celebration of architecture and a testament to the university's commitment to innovation.

And here's where it gets exciting: the public opening of the extension is just the beginning. What impact will this new architectural gem have on the city's landscape and the university's reputation? Will it inspire a new generation of architects? The possibilities are endless, and the journey has only just begun. Stay tuned for more updates and be part of this exciting architectural adventure!
