Gen Z's Dilemma: Trapped in Adolescence, Postponing Parenthood
A startling revelation has emerged from a recent study: only 10% of Gen Z have become parents by the age of 23, a stark contrast to the 24% of millennials who had children at a similar age. This trend, uncovered by researchers from the prestigious UCL Centre for Longitudinal Studies, is based on data from the Millennium Cohort Study (MCS), which tracks the lives of 19,000 Gen Z individuals born between 2000 and 2002.
But here's where it gets controversial: the UK's birthrate is in freefall, and this trend is mirrored worldwide. The fertility rate in England and Wales has been on a three-year decline, reaching a record low of 1.41 children per woman. The average age of new parents is also rising, with mothers' average age increasing from 29 to 31 and fathers' from 32 to 33.9 between 2004 and 2024.
And this is the part most people miss: despite these statistics, Gen Z still dreams of parenthood. A staggering 61% of Gen Zers aspire to have children or expand their families. However, the economic reality is daunting. The MCS study reveals that 68% of Gen Z are living with their parents at age 23, a threefold increase compared to millennials a decade ago. Financial constraints are a significant barrier, with many unable to afford moving out or saving for a home deposit.
The study's lead author, Charlotte Booth, attributes this delay in adulthood to economic challenges, stating, 'These financial challenges may have far-reaching consequences, potentially leading to lower birth rates and increased mental health issues.' She urges policymakers to address this issue by supporting Gen Z's quest for affordable housing and stable employment, which could ultimately benefit the UK's economy and society.
