Italy's Historic Win: Major Ranking Shift in Rugby World (2026)

The long-awaited shift in the World Rugby Men’s Rankings has finally arrived after a 12-year hiatus, and the implications are significant. Just recently, Italy secured a thrilling 18-15 victory against Scotland in a wet and challenging match held in Rome. This key win has led to a dramatic reshuffling of positions within the rankings that will officially take effect at noon on Monday.

With this victory, Italy will ascend to the ninth position, marking their first opening weekend win in an impressive 13 years. In contrast, Scotland will slip down to the tenth spot. Notably, this is the first occasion since June 2013 that Italy has outpaced Scotland in the rankings, at which time both teams were ranked 10th and 11th respectively.

Following their triumph, Italy will gain an additional 0.82 points, enhancing their rating to 79.81 points, which is 0.41 points higher than Scotland’s. As a result, Scotland will lose an equal amount of points, further emphasizing the competitive nature of these rankings.

But Italy and Scotland are not alone in experiencing shifts; the Six Nations teams have also seen some movement. France has managed to leapfrog Ireland into the fourth position, thanks to their convincing 36-14 win over Ireland in the opening match of the 2026 Six Nations tournament held in Paris. Consequently, Ireland finds itself at a near four-year low in fifth place.

On the other hand, England maintains its third-place standing with a stable rating of 89.41 points, following a commanding 48-7 victory against Wales at Allianz Stadium in Twickenham—although this win didn’t translate into any changes in their ranking. Wales remains in the tenth position with a score of 74.24 points.

In the inaugural round of the Rugby Europe Men’s Championship, both Spanish teams celebrated away victories. Spain kicked off their campaign determined to improve upon last year's runner-up finish to Georgia by achieving a notable 51-33 triumph over the Netherlands in Amsterdam. Meanwhile, Portugal successfully navigated a challenging match against Belgium, emerging with a decisive 47-17 win in Mons.

Though the result does not impact Spain's current ranking of 15th, Portugal's impressive performance sees them rise to 19th, pushing Samoa down to a record low of 20th.

As we anticipate the remaining two matches of the first round of the Rugby Europe Championship today, Switzerland will be taking on the defending champions, Georgia, while Germany will host Romania.

Here’s a snapshot of the updated top 12 in the World Rugby Men’s Rankings:

  1. South Africa - 93.94
  2. New Zealand - 90.33
  3. England - 89.41

  9. Italy - 79.81
  10. Scotland - 79.40
  11. Wales - 74.23
  12. Japan - 74.09

This recent shakeup sparks intriguing questions: What do you think about Italy’s resurgence in the rankings? Is Scotland’s drop a cause for concern, or just a temporary setback? Feel free to share your thoughts and engage in the discussion!
