A beloved family-owned jewellery business, C W Sellors, has fallen victim to the economic climate, entering administration after a remarkable 47-year journey. But what led to this sudden downfall? And what does it mean for the employees and loyal customers?
This iconic retailer, known for its exquisite jewellery and watches, once boasted 10 stores across the North of England and the Midlands. Its origins date back to 1979 when it established a high-street presence in several charming towns, including Whitby, York, and Ashbourne.
But here's where the story takes a turn: In January, the company's fate changed as Lee Causer and Ben Peterson from BDO took over as joint administrators. This move came as a shock to many, especially considering the company's rich history and the 86 staff members who were previously employed.
BDO's consolidation of all Whitby locations into one shop, W Hamond, led to four store closures. The administrators cited cash flow problems, exacerbated by the cost-of-living crisis, despite significant investments in new facilities. A controversial aspect is that this crisis has affected many businesses, but not all have succumbed to administration.
The administrators are now seeking a buyer, as the company's turnover has dipped from £30.4 million to £28.5 million in the last year. The situation is dire, with 36 employees made redundant immediately, leaving just 50 staff members to support the administrators in keeping the business afloat.
CW Sellors was more than just a retailer; it was a destination for luxury, featuring fine jewellery and timepieces from top brands like IWC Schaffhausen, Gucci, and TAG Heuer. It even supplied the Company of Master Jewellers, a prestigious industry group.
As of now, the business remains operational, but online purchases are temporarily unavailable. Customers can still place orders in-store at the remaining shops in Ashbourne, Bakewell, Shrewsbury, Matlock, York, and Whitby.
The company's statement ends on a hopeful note, expressing gratitude for customers' support during this challenging time.
What are your thoughts on this news? Do you think the administrators will find a buyer, or is this the end of an era for C W Sellors?
