A New Era for College Football?
In a bold move, college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit has proposed a radical solution to fix the sport's ongoing issues. He suggests a complete breakaway, a revolution if you will, to create a new league and governing body for the Power Four conferences.
The sport of college football has undergone a massive transformation in a short span. From NIL deals to conference realignments, and an ever-changing playoff format, it's a far cry from the traditional game we once knew. Players are now paid, and the old geographic boundaries are a thing of the past. Bowl games, once a cherished tradition, are fading away, and the transfer portal has opened up a whole new world of opportunities and challenges.
Herbstreit's idea is simple yet controversial: let the Power Four conferences create their own league, their own rules, and their own governing body. He envisions a new level of college football, separate from the Group of Five, with its own playoff system, much like the FCS and Division II and III. This proposal would essentially create a new elite tier, with a commissioner and a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) to govern the relationship between players, teams, and agents.
But here's where it gets interesting... and potentially explosive. The NCAA, the current governing body, has been criticized for its ineffectiveness and lack of control. The big programs and conferences have already taken over the College Football Playoff system, so why not formalize this separation? The Group of Five teams, despite their occasional playoff appearances, are often quickly eliminated, leading to discussions about limiting their access to the tournament.
And this is the part most people miss: the direct payment of players. Herbstreit believes this will lead to costly lawsuits, and he's right. Without a CBA, the sport could face legal battles and uncertainty. A CBA, as seen in professional sports, would provide a clear framework, ensuring fair rules and agreements between all parties involved.
Making collegiate athletes essentially professionals with a union is a massive step, but one that many believe is necessary. The current state of affairs is unsustainable, and Herbstreit's suggestion could be the catalyst for positive change. However, it's not without its critics, especially among G5 teams who see the CFB Playoff as their chance to shine and grow their programs.
