The closure of a beloved local courier service has left the cycling community in Oxford feeling disheartened. Pedal & Post, known for its distinctive blue cargo bikes, has ceased operations due to the loss of a significant client, which ultimately led to the termination of all its services within the city. This unfortunate turn of events has resulted in job losses for 60 individuals, comprising both employed and self-employed team members from Oxford and London.
Robin Tucker, co-chairman of CoHSAT, shared his feelings about the situation, stating that the Coalition for Healthy Streets and Active Travel is "very sad" about the shutdown of this once-thriving business. He reminisced, "For over a decade, their bright blue cargo bikes and friendly riders have been a comforting presence on the streets of Oxford, helping to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce pollution while delivering essential medical supplies even during rush hour."
Notably, Pedal & Post was not just any courier service; it operated with a strong ethical framework, ensuring that all riders were employees earning the Oxford living wage and receiving high-quality training. Mr. Tucker expressed hope that many of Pedal & Post's clients will shift to other cycle logistics companies, thereby continuing the tradition of green, clean, and efficient deliveries.
Cyclox chairman Ian Loader also voiced his sorrow regarding the company's closure. He emphasized, "For 14 years, they have facilitated quicker and quieter deliveries throughout the city, contributing significantly to improved air quality—a benefit for everyone’s health—and ensuring prompt delivery of critical medications, including chemotherapy for cancer patients. Cycle couriers are not only fast but also dependable, and we would love to see an increase in their presence in the city center to minimize pollution and traffic congestion."
Moreover, many businesses and charities are likely to continue relying on cycle couriers for their deliveries, as this method proves advantageous for their operations, their customers, and the residents of Oxford.
Expressing her disappointment, city councillor Anna Railton, who oversees efforts towards achieving zero carbon emissions in Oxford, stated that she is "really sorry" to see Pedal & Post close, labeling it a "great loss" to the community. She praised the company for its commitment to innovation over the years, which significantly enhanced the safety and sustainability of deliveries within the city.
