Here’s a story that will tug at your heartstrings: Gerd Hamilton, a woman whose life was a testament to love, resilience, and community, has left us. But here’s where it gets truly inspiring—her legacy isn’t just in the years she lived (April 3, 1933 – February 11, 2026), but in the lives she touched and the values she embodied. Gerd (née Bissberg) passed away peacefully in her sleep at the hospital, surrounded by her three surviving children, after a brief illness. Her journey, however, was anything but brief—it was rich, meaningful, and filled with moments that shaped her into the remarkable person she was.
Born and raised in Hurkett as the only child of Knute and Inga Bissberg, Gerd faced an early challenge when her father passed away shortly after her high school graduation. And this is the part most people miss—it was this moment that defined her strength. She and her mother moved to Fort William, where Gerd quickly took charge, securing a job as a long-distance operator at Bell Canada and finding an apartment in Westfort. This determination set the tone for her life, marked by hard work and a deep sense of responsibility.
It was in Westfort that she met William Gordon Hamilton, her future husband. Together, they built a life filled with family and community. After the birth of their first child, Carol, they moved to Vickers Heights, where Gerd’s mother also lived until her passing in 1959. Gerd and Gordon raised four children in that home, and when the kids were older, Gerd returned to work, first as a switchboard operator at Sears and later in Personnel, where she spent many dedicated years.
But here’s where it gets controversial—while many might see her as ‘just’ a homemaker and employee, Gerd’s impact went far beyond her roles. She was a pillar of her community, volunteering tirelessly for organizations like the ANAF Service Club, Vickers Garden’s Women’s Institute, The Viking Club, and The Scandinavian Home Society. Her involvement in the Vickers Heights Community Centre’s activities was nothing short of inspiring. How many of us can say we’ve given back so selflessly? It’s a question worth pondering.
Gerd’s passions were as vibrant as her spirit. She loved cooking, gardening, crafting, and traveling, especially to Florida for winters and Kash River Resort for summers. Her Norwegian heritage was a source of pride, and she cherished learning about her roots. Yet, above all, her family was her heart. Survived by daughters Carol (Buster) and Susan, son Larry (Deidre), grandchildren Jennifer, Lee, Kim, Jamie (Kdee), Amanda, Jeff (Victoria), Laura (Devon), Cale, and great-granddaughter Hallie, Gerd was the epitome of a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her love knew no bounds, and her absence will be deeply felt.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Gordon, her son Gary, daughter-in-law Donna, cousin Eleanor (Ken) Methot, and several in-laws, including June and Henry Feaver, Wilma and Victor Koczkur, and Ross and Helen Hamilton. Here’s a thought to chew on—Gerd’s relationship with her in-laws was so close, it challenges the stereotype of familial tensions. Could her secret be in how she nurtured these relationships? It’s a lesson in empathy and connection.
A private interment has taken place at Mountainview Cemetery, where Gerd rests beside her beloved Gordie. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, The Salvation Army, or a charity of your choice would honor her memory.
