Steam's New UI: Good or Bad for Indie Game Developers? (2026)

Is Steam's sleek redesign good or bad for indie game developers? It's a question that's been dividing the gaming community, and for good reason. The new UI redesign aims to create a more modern and cohesive look, but it's the impact on indie developers that's causing the most debate. Personally, I think the redesign has both positive and negative aspects, and it's a delicate balance that Valve needs to navigate. The most immediately noticeable changes are superficial: the wider layout with bigger game artwork. As well as looking more modern, this has some practical benefits for those browsing on desktop setups with large monitors. But for developers, there's both a win and a lose with the new design. The win is that the new layout is cleaner and less cluttered, which can improve the user experience for gamers. The lose is that the Popular Upcoming section has been changed, making it much less likely for small indie games to appear. The Popular Upcoming section used to list games chronologically by release time, and indie developers could gain visibility by reaching the 7,000 wishlist milestone. Now, the section is focused on major releases with around 80,000 wishlists, and it's listed algorithmically rather than chronologically. This means that smaller games are now less likely to be discovered, and the 7,000 wishlist number becomes meaningless. This is disheartening for indie developers, who rely on the platform to gain visibility for their games. However, it's not all bad news. Valve has added a new Personal Calendar on the Steam home page, which recommends recent and upcoming releases based on a user's gaming habits, wishlist, and interests. This could make it easier for players to discover new games that meet their personal tastes, and potentially boost sales even if views decline. In my opinion, the redesign has both positive and negative impacts on indie developers. While the new layout is cleaner and more modern, the changes to the Popular Upcoming section could make it harder for smaller games to be discovered. Valve needs to strike a balance between creating a cohesive and modern look, and ensuring that indie developers have a fair chance to gain visibility on the platform. What do you think of the UI redesign? Is it an improvement for gamers and developers, or will it make some games harder to find?
