The Steelers have officially signed Tre Flowers, a 6'3" cornerback with impressive physical attributes. This move comes after wide receiver DK Metcalf was suspended for two games due to a fan altercation, leaving a vacant spot on the roster. Flowers will step in to fill this void, bringing his considerable size and experience to the team.
During his pre-draft evaluation, Flowers showcased his impressive build, weighing in at 202 pounds with 34-inch arms. The Seattle Seahawks recognized his potential and drafted him in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Since then, Flowers has played in 97 games, starting in 44 of them. He has four interceptions to his name, with three of those coming in the 2019 season. Additionally, he boasts an extensive special teams background, having played nearly 1,200 total snaps in this role.
Flowers' versatility is a key asset, as he can play both inside and outside cornerback positions. This flexibility will be invaluable for the Steelers, who have recently faced injuries in their secondary. With Jalen Ramsey moving down from safety to the slot due to Brandin Echols' groin injury, and James Pierre still recovering from a calf injury, the Steelers' cornerback depth has been tested.
Flowers' journey in the NFL has taken him to several teams, including the Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons, Cincinnati Bengals, and Jacksonville Jaguars. He was waived by the Lions earlier this season after playing in two games without recording any stats. However, the Steelers saw potential in Flowers, having previously hosted him for a Pro Day dinner at Oklahoma State when he was still a safety. The team eventually drafted two other players from that class, but now they've reunited with Flowers.
With the Steelers' cornerback position lacking depth, Flowers is expected to make an immediate impact. He could be a direct replacement for Echols on special teams, and if the Steelers have secured their playoff position, Flowers might even see some defensive action in the final two games of the regular season.
