Trump declared that the US launched a "powerful and deadly strike" against the Islamic State (IS) group in northwestern Nigeria. He took to Truth Social to condemn IS, labeling them as "terrorist scum" allegedly targeting Christians. But here's where it gets controversial...
Trump's announcement mentioned "numerous perfect strikes" without providing specific details. Simultaneously, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth expressed gratitude for the Nigerian government's support. However, the exact targets and timing of these strikes remain unclear. This follows Trump's November order for the US military to prepare for action against Islamist militant groups in Nigeria.
The Nigerian government has not yet publicly commented on these reported strikes. In his post, Trump vowed that under his leadership, "Radical Islamic Terrorism" would not prosper. He previously declared Nigeria a "Country of Particular Concern" due to an alleged "existential threat" to its Christian population, citing "thousands" killed without providing evidence. This designation by the US State Department allows for sanctions against countries violating religious freedom.
And this is the part most people miss... Groups monitoring violence in Nigeria dispute the claim that Christians are being killed more than Muslims, as the country is roughly divided between the two religions. An advisor to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu emphasized Nigeria's sovereignty and stated that the jihadists have targeted people of all faiths. President Tinubu has affirmed religious tolerance in the country, noting that security challenges affect people across faiths and regions.
Jihadist groups like Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province have caused significant damage in northeastern Nigeria for over a decade. However, according to Acled, a group analyzing political violence, most of the victims have been Muslims. In central Nigeria, clashes between Muslim herders and Christian farming groups over resources have also resulted in thousands of deaths, with atrocities committed by both sides. Human rights groups confirm there's no evidence of disproportionate targeting of Christians.
It's worth noting: Last week, the US also conducted a "massive strike" against IS in Syria, involving fighter jets, attack helicopters, and artillery, striking over 70 targets.
